The Sr. Corporate Strategy Specialist is a cross-functional and hands-on position that is responsible for development of analytics to support strategic projects & inform execution of core business issues. This role will be responsible for strategic financial planning and modeling, including the Long Range Plan (LRP), competitive intelligence assessments and monitoring of adjacent or competing therapies across the product portfolio, as well as other analyses to support key company initiatives to align resources with the achievement of strategic goals, both long-term and short-term.
This position reports to the Corporate Strategy Lead (as well as involving regular interaction with the CBO and exposure to other members of the corporate management team) to support the Corporate Strategy and Planning organization’s decision-making on projects aligned with the company’s new product planning and market assessments, business development and M&A opportunities, as well as projects related to the strategic and organizational impact of such assessments. This person will participate actively in efforts involving corporate strategy and will make recommendations and impact a broad array of corporate activities in the fast-paced and rapidly evolving field of gene therapy.

Manage, validate, and refine Spark’s Long-Range Plan (LRP):
  • Establish long-term revenue forecasts and infrastructure/expenses and resultant assessment on valuation across Spark’s entire portfolio in collaboration with Commercial, New Product Planning and Finance functions
  • Develop, assess and update sensitivity analysis for internal and potential new/external programs
  • Align and integrate yearly budgeting process in partnership with Finance organization into the LRP
  • Partner within appropriate cross-functional teams to integrate insights as well as in-depth product and marketplace knowledge to inform planning process and ensure comprehensive analytical models adequately vet critical business variables
  • Conduct all necessary analytics for potential collaborations and internal product portfolio decisions
  • Assess and integrate current and future competitive drivers in the marketplace as well as functional expertise in how to use intelligence to develop competitive strategies and long-range forecasts
  • Interact with all levels of management, and communicate financial implications, guidance and recommendations presented in a professional manner

Monitor and assess public and private competitors and sell-side/market-based information to inform the organization’s knowledge base and decision making. Keep abreast of clinical, regulatory, commercial, and financial developments in therapeutic areas of interest and their impact on Spark:
  • With internal teams, define topics of interest and research, and monitor developments in the environment
  • Develop and maintain deep market, competition, and disease space understanding for areas of interest
  • Facilitate intelligence gathering via collaboration with internal personal in R&D, Medical, Commercial, and Business Development organizations
  • Ensure impact from competitive and market intelligence are shared with all appropriate commercial teams (includes scientific congresses, corporate news & pipeline updates, therapeutic area landscape reviews, sell-side equity research) and integrated into LRP sensitivity analysis as needed
  • Generate reports on the competitive landscape for pipeline products and work in partnership with internal teams to organize and produce competitive intelligence reports for concerned parties within the organization, including senior leadership
  • Develop a framework to interpret and draw actionable conclusions from incremental changes in competitor timelines, messaging, or development plans

Work closely with the New Product Planning team and provide analytical support for the assessment and selection of new products:
  • Contribute to initiatives supporting the portfolio prioritization and the development of new product opportunities to further establish Spark as a leader in selection, design, manufacture and formulation of highly optimized gene therapies
  • The individual will participate actively in new product planning efforts by providing objective, in-depth analyses on current and future markets, and establish product forecast models
  • Analyze potential of new product opportunities within Spark’s pipeline including competitive dynamics, timelines and expenses, and sales potential
Provide analytical support to Business Development during due diligence for in-license, M&A and partnering activities:
  • Participate in the financial assessment of proposed deal structures and terms

Participate in special projects as required to develop strategic and sound analysis to support senior management decision making:
  • Analyze data to identify critical business issues and opportunities for growth, collaborate with Spark’s teams, and integrate an external market point-of view into the strategic direction of the company
  • Provide an objective viewpoint based on an in-depth understanding and analysis of commercial, clinical, and scientific competitive information

  • Ability to elicit insights from limited datasets and incorporate findings into a strategic cognitive framework
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail with experience evaluating and analyzing complex financing and business initiatives
  • Able to think strategically while assessing what needs to be done to deliver results in a timely manner with high levels of accuracy and objectivity
  • Ability to work within interdisciplinary groups and draw upon each individual’s expertise to synthesize a deeper understanding of the issue at hand
  • Able to maintain confidentiality over all financial and corporate matters and information
  • Excellent modeling and presentation skills (Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills are required)
  • Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to effectively present information to various senior levels of an organization
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced and fluid environment
  • Must be self-motivated and function independently with limited supervision, while obtaining buy-in from key internal stakeholders, with the desire to work in a very dynamic environment

  • B.A./B.S. degree required with a preferred degree in Biology, Finance, Economics, Industrial Engineering or other business discipline
  • Generally has 5 or more experience in investment banking, management consulting, equity research, VC/PE or relevant operating experience in corporate finance/business development; or generally 5 or more years relevant life sciences (pharmaceutical and/or biotech) industry experience, preferably with understanding of the rare disease product environment
  • Experience building and maintaining complex market assessments and full P&L forecasts as well as licensing/M&A valuation modeling
