The Patient Advocacy Specialist is responsible for supporting the global patient advocacy team’s operational activities while also contributing to Spark’s interactions with specific non-profit advocacy organizations under the direction of the Head of Patient Advocacy.  This highly cross functional role will assist the global advocacy team and, at times the broader Public Affairs team, with patient focused internal communications, meeting planning, materials management, patient education efforts and other operational items relevant to the advocacy team’s internal needs. This operational role will have a blend of external engagement and education while contributing to strengthening the internal activities that drive the advocacy function’s internal efficiencies.

  • Help build Spark’s presence at relevant advocacy forums and deliver gene therapy education at patient meetings and conferences across the Spark portfolio
  • Represent the patient perspective internally and champion it in critical decision making; proactively drive ongoing internal communication about Spark’s advocacy function
  • Support strong collaborations with select advocacy organizations related to Spark’s portfolio.  Serve as single point of contact for specific advocacy groups and act as an ambassador to external patient groups, patients, patient advocates, families, and other relevant stakeholders. 
  • Coordinate responses to relevant patient inquiries to Spark’s patient inbox
  • Serve as an internal consultant to corporate communications on social media and Spark’s intranet activities
  • Help manage the team’s materials for meetings and events including fulfillment and booth/exhibit materials
  • Support the Spark Corporate Contributions process by ensuring regular meetings and completion of administrative steps needed to process requests
  • Help support internal approval process for messaging and materials to be used by the function
  • Event/Meeting Management support for Internal Events in partnership with Corporate Communications and Advocacy to include Awareness Day Events, all employee meetings, and Patient Advisory Boards

  • Strong business acumen with an ability to understand key clinical, scientific, and commercial information and relate it to stakeholders in an authentic way
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to build genuine relationships quickly with diverse populations
  • Collaborative work style with an equally strong ability to work independently and with a sense of urgency
  • Proficiency in navigating a high energy and dynamic work environment alongside passionate and dedicated colleagues at all management levels with ease and comfort

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s in Social Work, Genetic Counseling, Public Health or related field preferred.
  • 2+ years’ experience working in the field of patient advocacy/patient services, marketing, or public affairs, ideally in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry
  • Rare Disease Experience preferred
